UAE’s Waste Facts

In 2017, before launching our #ZeroWasteUAE initiative, Sustainability Tribe & this initiative’s founder, Amruta Kshemkalyani did a study to analyze UAE’s waste generated, recovered and send to landfills. This study was done for every emirate, based on data received from the Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Authority of UAE.

Based on the study results and waste analysis below infographics were prepared to raise public awareness about the UAE’s waste issue.

Rethink Plastic

It is clear from the above statistics how much municipal waste is generated in UAE, we all residents are responsible for it. Staggering 24% of the total municipal waste is plastic. This plastic waste, we can easily reduce by starting zero waste or less waste lifestyle. Using reusable items like water bottles, bags, coffee mugs and saying no to plastic straws are very simple things all of us can do. Read here some simple tips about reducing plastic waste.

UAE is blessed with 1,318 kilometers of coastline, you are always closer to the beach anywhere in UAE. However every time we do not recycle the plastic and litter it without thinking; it ends up directly in the Arabian sea. Plastic being lighter in weight, many plastic bags and straws and plastic items fly from land and end up in oceans. What do you think must be happening to all the plastic which ends up in seas?

Our plastic waste in the ocean directly threatens the UAE’s endangered species, hawksbill turtle and other types of sea turtles. The plastic bags in the ocean look like jellyfish and therefore many times the marine turtles ingest them and choke on it. But if you think only marine life is getting affected because of marine debris, think twice.

New studies have found that microplastics are found in 90% of table salt. The brief explanation is our plastic waste which ends up in oceans, decomposes in the seas into micro-plastics over the period of time and makes its way back to our life through salt.

Therefore, it’s need of time that we change our wasteful habits and start using reusable items to reduce waste and ocean plastic.
